Here’s some information on my current writing projects. If you’re interested in beta reading any of them, send me an email at ij AT coho DOT org. We’ll talk about it.

The Lotus Imperiate

The Lotus Imperiate (or tLI, as I’ve chosen to abbreviate it) is my current main project. At the time of this writing, the first draft of the book is about two-fifths finished, with the second draft still to come. I kind of think of it as my magical-thriller-kung-fu-god-assassination-heist-epic.

The basic story follows several characters: Kitt Ashlocke, a foreign thief contracted to take on the most dangerous heist imaginable; Mara, a priestess driven to revenge by her lover’s death; Qi Lo, a member of a disgraced group of assassins who has lost all control of his life; and Sen, a man who used to be a god before being exiled for committing the crime of loving a mortal. They have been recruited by a shadowy cabal which includes a magus and the son of a pirate lord to perform what no one has done before: to assassinate Enjiru, the chief of the gods.

Blech. I suck at writing cover copy. But it’s good, trust me. I hope to have the first draft finished by February of 2013, and I’m already thinking of who I need to be beta readers. If you’re interested in reading the book, then send me an email. We’ll talk about it.

Game Over

Game Over is even further from being completed. In fact, I haven’t even started it. Even so, it’s the thing that I’m going to write after I finish The Lotus Imperiate, so hopefully the first draft will be finished by the end of 2013.

Game Over is a science fiction novel set in a dark future, when the United States government has collapsed and society has contracted into individual city-states. To escape the bleakness of their world, people have retreated into playing MMOs, the most popular of which is a sword-and-sorcery game called Legends of Erendor. When the top one thousand arena fighters in Erendor are summoned to San Francisco to take part in a massive tournament of champions, it becomes international news. But someone is killing off the top players. And there are rumors that Kepler, the avatar of Erendor’s late eccentric creator Jerry Munroe, has been sighted wandering the wilderness of Erendor…

Update, 9/16/2012: I’ve written the first draft of the prologue to Game Over. If you want to read it, click this handy and convenient link.

“Cassandra” is a novelette that I wrote back in April of 2012. It’s still in its first draft– I’m going to revise it soon– but it’s good. At least, the three people who have read it so far tell me so.

I think of “Cassandra” as a hybrid between Groundhog Day and War of the Worlds. It’s not really like either of those things, of course, but I still think of it that way. It’s a story about love, and death, and childhood, and memory, and how you would live your life differently if you were given the chance to. It’s maybe the most “high-concept” of my stories so far, and I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever written. I don’t know. We’ll see.
